This modular sofa by Wiener Werkstätten captures something of the freedom and optimism of the 1970s. Its low, generous forms seem less designed to impose a way of sitting than to invite one to sink in, stretch out, and stay awhile. The individual modules gather together almost like a landscape, soft and continuous.

Its fabric gives the sofa its unmistakable character. Swirling abstract motifs in purple, orange, pink, yellow, and blue move across the upholstery with a vivid, almost dreamlike energy. The pattern feels spontaneous and immersive, wrapping the rounded forms in color and giving the whole composition a sense of motion.
