Victor Vasarely Artistic Chess Set
Victor Vasarely, chess set, plexiglass, France, 1979
Victor Vasarely (1906-1997), one of the important artists of the optical art, designed this chess set in 1979. On a cross-legged plexiglass base rests the squared chess board with 32 pieces. A colorful print under a transparent top structures the chess field and furthermore its surroundings with a pattern of round forms in angular fields. Green, blue and purple colors catch the eye. The chess pieces are abstract forms that are clear for one player and frosted for the opponent. The glass-like appearance of the transparent material adds a certain lightness to the design which focuses on the color board and the geometrical chess pieces.
