Maria Westra, sculpture, wood, perspex, Netherlands, 1985.
This breathtaking cubistic abstract sculpture is derived from Westra's interest in monumental fabrics and weaving. Her main curiosity lies in the design of textiles. In this case, her Perspex cube is composed of several plates, each of them is engraved in white, red or blue which resemble weaving patterns by using a thread-based design that she layered on top of one another. This play of lines and space gives this artwork a vibrant and spacious look. The pedestal is made of wood and is exact the same size as the artwork. The cube convinces visually through the well-balanced appearance and stabile construction accomplished by the structural arrangement of patterned sheets that have a clearly defined structure, showing great craftsmanship and artistry.
