Studio BBPR for Olivetti, 'Spazio' side table, metal, vinyl, plastic, Italy, ca. 1960

The 'Spazio' series was designed by Studio BBPR for Olivetti in 1960. It won the Compasso d'Oro Award in 1962. Today the desk of the 'Spazio' series is featured in MoMA permanent collection. This free-standing ‘Spazio’ side table features three drawers and one door with a lock. It shows the typical characteristics of the ‘Spazio’ line that BBPR designed with great eye for proportions, textures and colors. The top in vinyl hangs slightly over the doors. Notable are also the legs which end in black weels and therefore make this item easy to move around. Admirable patina contributes to the unique look of the item.

BBPR was an architectural partnership founded by Gianluigi Banfi (1910-1945), Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso (1909-2004), Enrico Peressutti (1908-1976) and Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909-1969). BBPR was thus an acronym formed from the first letters of their family names. The partnership was founded in opposition to Fascism. BBPR wanted to develop a style that had no references to contemporary politics. During WW II, Gianluigi Banfi died in the camps of the Nazi’s whereas the others were also severely defined by this era.
