Seguso Vetri d’Arte, chandelier, Murano pulegoso glass, Murano glass, nickel-plated steel and brass, Italy, 1950s
The Seguso lineage stands as one of Murano island's most venerable families, with a history deeply embedded in Venetian Glass craftsmanship dating back to 1397. They have risen to prominence as leading authorities in the production of artistic masterpieces and bespoke furnishings. Seguso's master glassmakers have produced exquisite pieces for royal households and prominent business empires globally. Notably, in 1605, the Seguso name was enshrined in Murano's "Libro d’Oro," a prestigious register that acknowledged distinguished glassmaking families and conferred upon them a noble status.
The present wall light exemplifies the synthesis of artisanal glassmaking and mid-century design innovation that characterized Seguso Vetri d’Arte in the 1950s. The composition is structured around a clear, rational geometry: a horizontal nickel-plated brass arm supports a vertically oriented glass element, crowned by a softly rounded shade.
The upper shade, executed in pulegoso Murano glass in a warm beige or sand tone, is particularly characteristic. The pulegoso technique is achieved by introducing gases into the molten glass to create a dense field of fine bubbles. This produces a softly diffused luminosity and a tactile, almost stone-like surface.
Below, the elongated glass cup employs a controlled bubble (bullicante-like) effect, with larger, more rhythmically dispersed air inclusions.
