Sale price$18,400.00

Venini, chandelier, model '5538', Zanfirico crystal glass (Murano glass), brass, Italy, 1950s

It is hard to resist the charm of this lovely 1950s Venini pendant lamp that evokes the charming appearance of a wrapped candy and exemplifies the Venetian glassmaker's mastery of traditional Murano glassmaking technique. The lamp is distinguished by its elongated, oval-shaped shade, crafted from delicate Zanfirico crystal glass. Zanfirico is a sophisticated Venetian glassmaking technique dating back to the 16th century, traditionally known as filigrana a retortoli. The process involves incorporating fine threads of opaque white or colored glass into transparent glass canes, which are then heated, stretched, and twisted to create intricate spiral and lattice-like patterns. These decorative canes are subsequently arranged, fused together, and blown into the desired form. Requiring exceptional precision and control, the technique produces elaborate patterns that appear almost woven into the glass itself. During the 1950s, Venini revisited and refined this centuries-old technique, exploring its decorative possibilities within a distinctly modern design language.
