Paavo Tynell for Taito Oy, pair of wall lights, model ‘9405’, brass, glass, Finland, 1940s

A Rare Model from the 94 Series

Among the rarer lighting designs created by Paavo Tynell, these model 9405 wall lights beautifully illustrate the mature design language that established him as one of the most influential lighting designers of the twentieth century. Produced during the early post-war years by Taito Oy, the company he co-founded and helped transform into Finland's leading lighting manufacturer, the lamps belong to a period in which Tynell's distinctive approach to lighting reached its fullest expression.

Nature in Brass and Glass

What makes these wall lights particularly striking is their sense of motion. Unlike conventional wall-mounted fixtures that adhere to a rigid, symmetrical arrangement, Tynell introduces a dynamic, flowing quality through the curvilinear brass arms. The elongated, flared glass shades echo the shape of blooming flowers or torch flames. Their creamy, semi-opaque hue allows for gentle diffusion, casting a warm, ambient glow that enhances the softness of the form. Originally trained as a metalsmith, he possessed an exceptional command of metalworking techniques, evident in the precision and refinement of every detail. His designs were never merely functional objects but carefully orchestrated compositions in which material, form, and light worked together in perfect harmony.

The Man who Illuminated Finland

Often referred to as "the man who illuminated Finland," Tynell played a pivotal role in shaping the country's lighting culture during the first half of the twentieth century. He belonged to the generation that, during the 1920s and 1930s, laid the foundation for the Finnish art industry on which the renowned design movement of the 1950s would later flourish. His most active design years fell between 1919 and 1954, when Oy Taito Ab was in full operation. During that period, he created numerous decorative lamps, which found their way into both public buildings, such as churches, hospitals, restaurants, cinemas, hotels, schools, offices, and factories, and private homes. The late 1940s were particularly prolific for Tynell; it was then that his signature decorative style fully matured, blending functionalism with ornamental elements. His work was presented to international audiences, notably through Finland House in New York. Taito’s reputation also grew among prominent architects, making it one of Finland’s leading lighting manufacturers.
