True to its name, the Gem sofa by Lodovico Acerbis for Acerbis is a rare and refined example of early twenty-first-century Italian design, distinguished by its clarity of structure and innovative use of materials. Designed in 2002, the sofa reflects Acerbis’ ongoing exploration of furniture as an architectural system rather than a purely decorative object. The defining elements of the design are the side frames made of transparent black acrylic. These panels serve as both structural supports and visual boundaries, giving the sofa a light, almost immaterial presence despite its solid construction. At the time of production, the acrylic frames could be selected in various colours, underscoring the experimental and contemporary character of the design. The structure is completed by horizontal chromed metal tubes, which visibly support the seating and back cushions. In contrast, the cushions are upholstered in black leather, introducing comfort while maintaining a sober and restrained appearance.
