Giuseppe Rivadossi for Officina Rivadossi, 'Blocco Galla' coffee table, ash, Italy, 1968-1989

This captivating monolithic 'Blocco Galla' coffee table is designed by Giuseppe Rivadossi in the late 1960s. Rivadossi's production of Blocco Galla was so limited that only one table was crafted per year from 1968 to 1989, which makes each one unique in its own way. The yearly production serves as a testament to its rarity.

It is notable that this piece was made by a great sculptor and visionary, the table is build up from blocks of wood that were carved and cut into this amazing shape. The top and sides are decorated with geometrical excisions. The surface has a hammered texture, making it very organic and interesting to look at. This piece shows so many fascinating details in its design because of the numerous techniques that were used in crafting this piece. The enormous heft of this piece does not take away its elegance, as it appears to be floating on the ground.

Giuseppe Rivadossi (1935) was born in Monteclana di Nave, Italy, where he still lives and works. At a young age, Rivadossi's path begins with wood carving, with works reflecting on his poetic idea of living. In 1962, Rivadossi took over the carpentry founded in 1920 by his father Clemente, which he transformed into an atelier, or rather a creative workshop. Eventually, Rivadossi and collaborators established 'Officina Rivadossi' in 1976 where he started the manufacture of wooden objects and unique modern furniture.
