Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard Nielsen for Fritz Hanse, ‘X’ lounge chair, canvas, mahogany, burlwood, metal, Denmark, 1959.

Conceived in 1959, the present X lounge chair is a creation of the esteemed Danish duo, Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard Nielsen. Celebrated for its distinct X-shape, the chair embodies intricate details that span from its front legs to its rear, showcasing a stunning burl wood inlay and expertly crafted laminated woodwork. The cognac brown canvas seat features a distinctive gap in the middle that completes the piece.

Danish designer duo Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993) worked together between 1944-1975. The couple, originally trained as architects, designed around 250 furniture objects. The first dismountable chair has been designed by the couple, that created an enormous boost for the Danish furniture export. In 1950, their best-known design, the AX-chair went into production by Fritz Hansen. The implementation of double bent laminated wood, a technique normally used to produce tennis rackets, was a huge breakthrough for the upscaling of furniture production as it reduces the average production time. Thanks to this revolutionary technique, Denmark became the leader in Modern furniture manufacturing.
