Paavo Tynell for Taito Oy Rare Pair of '7227' Wall Lights
Dating from circa 1935, this elegant pair of wall lamps by Paavo Tynell reflects the restrained functionalism of his early designs. The cylindrical white glass shade is complemented by a carefully constructed framework of nickel-plated brass, with gracefully curved supports and refined metal detailing.
Impressed signature "O.Y. TAITO A.B.".
Often referred to as "the man who illuminated Finland," Tynell played a pivotal role in shaping the country's lighting culture during the first half of the twentieth century. He belonged to the generation that, during the 1920s and 1930s, laid the foundation for the Finnish art industry on which the renowned design movement of the 1950s would later flourish. His most active design years fell between 1919 and 1954, when Oy Taito Ab was in full operation. During that period, he created numerous decorative lamps, which found their way into both public buildings, such as churches, hospitals, restaurants, cinemas, hotels, schools, offices, and factories, and private homes. Taito’s reputation also grew among prominent architects, making it one of Finland’s leading lighting manufacturers.

The apprentice who lit Helsinki
That hands-on training in sheet metal shaped everything that followed. In 1918 Tynell co-founded Taito and became its managing director and chief designer, working alongside figures including Alvar Aalto; by the 1930s the company had turned exclusively to lighting and become the trendsetter of the Finnish industry, with major commissions such as Helsinki's Parliament House. Tynell served as chairman of Ornamo, Finland's association of industrial designers, and trained a generation of young designers as drafting assistants at Taito — among them Helena Turpeinen, a glass designer he married in 1947.
In 1948 Tynell travelled to New York to oversee the installation of Taito's lighting at Finland House, work that drew coverage in the New York press. His most prominent American commission followed: the office lighting for Trygve Lie, the United Nations' first Secretary-General, in the new UN Building.
