When Bobby Cadwallader, the former president of Knoll, encountered the German designer Otto Zapf, the meeting quickly sparked a design commission that would lead to a series of executive chairs with a unique character. Zapf was asked to create both low-back and high-back versions, and his response was a bold departure from the crisp, angular office furniture typical of the period. He envisioned chairs as assemblies of soft, cushion-like volumes, each element carefully formed and then slipped over a hidden steel structure. This gave the designs a soft, bulbous quality; inviting rather than rigid. The proportions were deliberately oversized, with wide seats and thick, padded arms that offered comfort in a way that felt deliberate and tactile.
