Set of twelve dining chairs, velvet, walnut, brass, Denmark, 1940s

This large set of twelve dining chairs, made by a Danish cabinetmaker in the 1940s, presents a careful balance between functionality and understated elegance. Each chair is built on a solid walnut frame with clean, rectangular legs and crossbars connecting them low to the ground. The backrest is tall and straight, just slightly curved for comfort, with a crisp rectangular outline. The front edge of the seat is subtly curved, which breaks the strict lines just enough. The wooden framework of the chairs feature subtle, vertical and horizontal carvings of shallow fluted grooves, adding a quiet layer of refinement to the otherwise straightforward design. Brass studs are arranged in a precise, evenly spaced line that follows the outer edges of both the seat and the backrest. The design is a strong expression of Scandinavian Modernism – a style rooted in honesty of materials, clarity of form, and functional beauty.
