Pair of armchairs, velvet, walnut, brass, Denmark, 1940s

This pair of dining chairs, made by a Danish cabinetmaker in the 1940s, presents a careful balance between functionality and understated elegance. Each chair is built on a solid walnut frame with clean, rectangular legs and crossbars connecting them low to the ground. The backrest is tall and straight, just slightly curved for comfort, with a crisp rectangular outline. The front edge of the seat is subtly curved, which breaks the strict lines just enough. The wooden framework of the chairs feature subtle, vertical and horizontal carvings of shallow fluted grooves, adding a quiet layer of refinement to the otherwise straightforward design. Brass studs are arranged in a precise, evenly spaced line that follows the outer edges of both the seat and the backrest. The design is a strong expression of Scandinavian Modernism – a style rooted in honesty of materials, clarity of form, and functional beauty.

Please note that we advise reupholstery before use. This item contains threadbare upholstery with loose seams and tears. Reupholstery can be done before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Of course, a locally organized reupholstery is possible as well.
