Niels Otto Møller for J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, dining chair, model '77', fabric, teak, Denmark, 1959
Gracefully streamlined, the dining chair model 77, designed by the Danish master Niels Otto Møller, and crafted by his own company J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, epitomizes elegance and simplicity. Distinguished by expert woodworking featuring delicate and intricate carvings and joinery, the chair showcases a sophisticated framework. Its seat is adorned with a rich, textured blend of dark red/orange and black threads.
Niels Otto Møller (1920–1982) completed his cabinetmaking apprenticeship in 1939 and subsequently attended the Århus School of Design. In 1944, at just 24 years old, he founded his own furniture production company, JL Møllers Møbelfabrik, in a small workshop in Århus. Møller served as both head designer and workshop leader. As demand for his furniture grew, he gradually expanded the workshop.
A defining aspect of Møller’s approach was that all his designs were produced exclusively within his own company. This commitment to in-house craftsmanship continued even after his death, with J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik remaining the sole manufacturer of his furniture. The company was then taken over by his two sons, Jørgen Henrik and Jens Ole, who continue to run it to this day.
Møller’s design philosophy and aesthetic have become iconic in Danish design – marked by elegant, flowing curves, combined with a strong focus on functionality and lasting quality.
