Martin Visser for 't Spectrum, set of four 'SE82/SE02' dining chairs, wengé, straw, the Netherlands, design 1960, production 1960-1974
These four ‘SE82’ dining chairs, designed by Martin Visser for ‘t Spectrum, embody a precise balance of simplicity and material expression. The form is reduced to its essential structure: a rectilinear wooden frame in dark-stained wengé supports woven straw elements that define both seat and backrest. The geometry is strict and architectural; vertical legs and horizontal stretchers form a clear grid, interrupted only by the tactile irregularity of the natural fibers.
Martin Visser (1922-2009) was an acclaimed Dutch furniture designer and art collector. He began designing at a young age, yet was also known for his extensive art collection, which included works by COBRA artists, Anselm Kiefer, and Keith Haring. Visser had a keen eye for young and promising artists. His collection, comprising over 400 works, is housed at the Kröller-Müller Museum. Visser's career in design began at the department store De Bijenkorf. In 1955, he became the head of production and design at 't Spectrum, where he created numerous items.
