Attributed to Maria Pergay, swivel chairs, stainless steel, reupholstered leather, France, 1970s

These chairs are a prime example of the 1970s French design movement, which combined industrial modernity with the sensual luxury that characterized much high-end French design of the decade. Designers such as Maria Pergay, Michel Boyer, François Monnet, Roger Tallon, and later Guy de Rougemont employed steel not simply for structural efficiency but for its visual and atmospheric qualities. This design, attributed to Pergay, shows a single curving steel plane that wraps around the body like a shell. The unusually tall backrest gives the chairs an expressive presence, making them appear almost sculptural within the interior. The newly reupholstered cognac leather introduces a warm, tactile counterpoint to the cool industrial character of the stainless steel frame.

The chairs feature a 180° swivel function with auto-return, allowing 90° rotation to the left and right.
