Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius 'Grasshopper' Chaise Longue in Leather
Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius for Kill International, 'Grasshopper' lounge chair, model FK87, leather, canvas, chrome-plated steel, Germany, 1965.
The FK87 'Grasshopper' chaise longue is an iconic example of mid-century modern design, created in 1965 by Danish designers Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm. Originally manufactured by the German company Kill International, this piece epitomizes the designers' focus on functional elegance. The chaise's sleek, chrome-plated steel frame, with its angular forms and sharp, clean lines, earned it the nickname "Grasshopper." The seat, crafted from a stretched canvas sling, contours to the body for an ergonomic lounging experience. Upholstered in fine cognac leather, the seat is softly padded with slightly rounded edges for added comfort. At the top, a cylindrical leather neck pillow is suspended by adjustable straps. The chaise's gently sloping design, descending from the backrest to the footrest, creates an ideal reclined position for lounging. The Grasshopper is an excellent example of the seamless integration of structural geometry and luxurious comfort.
Preben Juhl Fabricius (1931–1984) and Jørgen Kastholm (1931–2007) first met in the 1950s while studying at the School of Interior Design, forging a friendship that would later blossom into a fruitful professional partnership. In the 1960s, they began collaborating and achieved their greatest acclaim as a design duo, despite also pursuing individual projects. Over the course of their eight-year partnership, they produced a remarkable range of high-quality furniture characterized by minimalistic and functional designs, often crafted from steel, glass, and leather. Many of their iconic creations were manufactured by the German company Kill International, cementing their legacy as pioneers of timeless modern design.
Kindly note that the piece is in good condition. The leather exhibits some patina and the chrome contains some minor scratches. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.
