Joe Colombo 'Elda' Swivel Lounge Chair in Black Leather and Fiberglass

Sale price$18,400.00

Joe Colombo for Comfort, lounge chair ‘Elda’, fiberglass, leather, Italy, design 1963

The ‘Elda’ chair is one of Italian designer Joe Colombo’s best-known designs. This particular black-on-black version is especially rare. Introduced in the 1960s, it was among the early furniture designs to make extensive use of fiberglass, a material that allowed Colombo to explore a more sculptural and enveloping form. He named the chair ‘Elda’ after his wife.

Its black fiberglass shell wraps around a series of generously padded leather cushions, supporting the sitter from several sides. The distinctive tufting, arranged in thick horizontal sections, gives the chair its characteristic appearance and creates a strong contrast with the smooth outer shell. A fully rotating base allows the entire chair to turn freely through 360 degrees, adding a functional element to its bold form. The ‘Elda’ chair has since become an icon of postwar Italian design and is represented in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Louvre in Paris.

Kindly note that the leather remains in excellent condition, with only minor signs of wear visible on the shell. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.
