Italian Mid-Century Modern 1950s Sculptural Writing Desk in Mahogany

Sale price$28,700.00

Writing desk, mahogany, glass, Italy, 1950s

This exceptional Italian desk from the 1950s embodies the sophistication and expressive freedom that defined the finest mid-century design. Crafted in richly figured mahogany and surmounted by a transparent glass top, the piece combines exceptional cabinetmaking with a distinctly sculptural sensibility.

The desk strongly recalls the work of Ico and Luisa Parisi in the way it transforms traditional cabinetmaking into something far more fluid, expressive and sculptural. Their furniture of the late 1940s and 1950s often moved beyond straightforward functional construction, favoring elegant, animated lines, tapered supports and an almost calligraphic handling of wood. The framework of this desk has a similar quality: long, sweeping members curve across the width of the desk, crossing and converging towards the centre before extending outward again in a fluid, continuous movement. Their profiles subtly taper and swell, creating a compelling rhythm of line and negative space. Rather than concealing the construction, the transparent top allows the eye to follow the beautifully shaped structure in its entirety. Equally distinctive are the beautifully curled drawer fronts.

This expressive treatment of the mahogany reveals the hand of an accomplished craftsman. The transitions between the individual elements are remarkably fluid, with carefully resolved junctions and softly worked surfaces that allow the structure to read as a unified sculptural form.
