Ilmari Tapiovaara Dining Table in Teak

This dining table, designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara, is a quintessential example of mid-century design, characterized by clean, functional lines and an absence of decorative elements. A similar table was presented at the second edition of La Selettiva del Mobile in 1957, where Tapiovaara was awarded second prize for her dining room design. The jury for that edition included Italian architects Mario Asnago and Carlo Mollino, Danish designer Erik Herløw, and German architect Herbert Hirche, a distinguished panel of leading figures in architecture and design.
During the twentieth century, Cantù was considered the Italian city of furniture. However, after the war, Cantù was unable to catch up with the rapid changes and advances and there were more foreign countries such as Scandinavia who, with their styles, grew in popularity and formed a massive competition for Cantù. Therefore, Cantù needed to renew their designs that were often outdated, in order to stay up to date with trends and regain popularity.
In the spring of 1954, the board of Cantù decided to launch an international prize competition for furniture designers that would in order to revive the economy of the local design and draw attention to Cantù. The “Selettiva del Mobile” was born and would be organized every two years up until 1975. Set up as a real international competition, it brought together designers from all over the world such as Franco Albini, Gio Ponti, Ilmari Tapiovaara, Sergio Rodrigues, Pieter de Bryune, Kho Lian Ie, Taichiro Nakay, and many others. The selection for received projects was done by the Concorso Internazionale del Mobili, a highly qualified jury.
Biography
Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914-1999) was a distinguished Finnish designer, initially trained as an interior designer. During World War II, Tapiovaara's early career involved designing equipment for the Finnish army. This experience familiarized him with the use of basic, readily available materials, such as local woods, and techniques that did not rely on nails or screws. After the war, Tapiovaara, together with his wife, founded their own design practice. He became renowned for his innovative and functional designs, securing numerous assignments from educational institutions, including schools and universities. His work is celebrated for its simplicity, practicality, and the seamless integration of form and function, which left a lasting impact on Finnish design and beyond.
