Illum Wikkelsø Set of Easy Chairs and Ottoman with Canvas Seats
Illum Wikkelsø for C.F. Christiansen, pair of easy chairs and ottoman model 272, teak, off-white canvas, leather, Denmark, 1963
Very rare easy chairs and ottoman by Danish designer Illum Wikkelsø in teak and canvas. The solid teak legs are tapered and lean slightly outwards, giving this set its characteristic look. The tip of the legs come through the canvas seats, which is spanned between the legs. The canvas is finished with cognac leather on the edges, creating a nice contrast with the canvas. A well-designed set with use of natural, honest materials.
Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999) was trained as a carpenter and later studied at the School of Arts & Crafts in Copenhagen. He first worked for the Danish furniture maker Jacob Kjær and the architect Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard until 1954 when he opened his studio on the outskirts of Aarhus. Here he designed especially simple and elegant seating with great functionality now considered classics of Danish furniture design. The style of his work varies from Kaare Klint's classicism Kaare Klints to the soft organic craft by Arne Jacobsen.
