Tearsheet
Illum Wikkelsø, 'Ox' lounge chair, sheepskin, wood, Denmark, 1960s
An exquisitely designed easy chair upholstered in sheepskin by esteemed Danish designer Illum Wikkelsø, this 'Ox Chair' embodies a series of intriguing details. The expansive headrest at the top of the backrest provides both style and comfort. The gracefully folded armrests transition seamlessly into the back, enhancing the chair's fluid aesthetic. Supported by wooden legs, the seat is positioned at a tilted, comfortable angle, with the leg design reflecting the signature characteristics of Wikkelsø's craftsmanship.
Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999) is trained as a carpenter and later studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. He first worked for the Danish furniture maker Jacob Kjær and the architect Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard until 1954 when he opened his studio on the outskirts of Aarhus. Here he designed especially simple and elegant seating with great functionality, now considered classics of Danish furniture design. The style of his work varies from Kaare Klint's classicism to the soft organic craft by Arne Jacobsen.
