Gino Russo Set of Four Armchairs in Oak and Woven Sea Grass

Sale price$13,800.00

Gino Russo, set of four dining chairs, oak, woven seagrass, United States. circa 1984

This set of armchairs is designed by the Italian American furniture designer Gino Russo. The frame of this piece of furniture is made of oak and features an open, cantilever construction with sharp lines and sleek, angular shapes. The backrest and seat are woven with seagrass, which adds a textured element to the design. The materials used in this chair give it a natural and cohesive appearance, with a harmonious tone.

Gino Russo was an Italian American furniture designer who hailed from a long line of craftsmen. He learned the trade by apprenticing under George Nakashima in New Hope, Pennsylvania for fourteen years. Russo was originally from Luzzi, a small town in Italy. His family owned and ran a woodcraft shop there. He later immigrated to the United States. Russo's furniture design style deviated from traditional European and American modern designs. He described it as "impressionistic or free flow." Russo's furniture was made by following the natural lines of the wood, rather than altering the wood significantly. He based the design on the inherent characteristics of the wood, and incorporated the natural differences in the material rather than trying to make it symmetrical. This approach allowed him to create unique pieces that celebrated the natural beauty of the wood.
