Gianfranco Frattini for Cassina, bar stools, model '112', walnut, leatherette, Italy, 1959
These barstools, model 112, were first created for the Stork Club restaurant in Milan. The interior and furnishings were designed by Gianfranco Frattini, who, before establishing his own studio in the mid-1950s, had worked in the office of Gio Ponti. Several of Frattini’s pieces, along with designs by Carlo de Carli and Ico and Luisa Parisi, were later chosen by Ponti for projects such as the Hotel Royal in Naples (1955) and the Parco dei Principi hotels in Sorrento (1962) and Rome (1964). The interiors of the latter projects also featured the model 112 barstools.
Gianfranco Frattini (1926-2004) was born in Padua and studied architecture at the Milan Politechnico. After his studies, Frattini started working for Gio Ponti until 1956. Afterwards, he opened his own practice in Milan and began creating his own designs. His work is mostly part of the generation that created the Italian design movement of the late 1950s through the 1960s. The designer eventually died in Milan in 2004.
