French Alpine Chalet Chairs in Solid Pine

Sale price$1,350.00

Dining chairs, solid pine, France, 1950s

Crafted in solid pine and preserved from a chalet tucked high in the French mountains, this set of chairs carries you straight back to the spirited montagna culture. The ensemble speaks of warm interiors, the fresh scent of spruces, and the magic of the winter mountain life.

These pieces belong to a pivotal moment in alpine culture. The popularity of winter sports, and with it the fascination for mountain chalets, can already be traced back to the 1920s. But it was in the years following the Second World War that this enthusiasm fully blossomed. As postwar Europe rediscovered travel and leisure, ski stations and mountain chalets flourished, and architects sought to create interiors in harmony with the mountain environment, designing rustic-inspired designs with a new, modern comfort.

The shapes are unmistakably rooted in the French alpine tradition: bold, sculptural silhouettes carved from generous slabs of pine, and executed according to traditional methods. The wood is thick, weighty, and beautifully worn, its surface still marked by time and use.
