Francis Jourdain, pair of armchairs, straw, stained beech, France, 1920s

This exceptional design is by French painter and cabinetmaker Francis Jourdain (1876–1958) and exudes a refined provincial charm, embodying an exquisite elegance of remarkable quality. The type of upholstery and construction gives the chair a character of its own. Traditionally, with this type of rustic chair, the fiber threads are woven, creating braided ropes that are then arranged alongside or upon each other. This imparts the piece with a visually interesting geometric pattern. The way the frame is built, in a reconstructivist manner, is typical of French design from the first half of the twentieth century.
