Sale price$38,000.00

Finn Juhl for Bovirke, wall unit, model 'BO71', teak, pine, brass, Denmark, 1950s

This eccentric library unit designed by the renowned designer Finn Juhl is based on an elongated construction, offering a variety of different storage possibilities. A sophisticated composition is created by the arrangement of different open and closed compartments. The whole construction is based on six vertical columns made of teak. Every column is accompanied with multiple shelves executed in pine with brass bookends. Notable is the shape of these bookends that echo the shape of the shelves when seen sideways. The shelves themselves have beautiful brass detailing on the sides. Looking from left to right, the third column is provided with a solid cabinet with two larger and four smaller drawers decorated with moon-shaped brass handles. This means that you can hide your belongings by placing them behind the doors or be stowed in the shelves with the open and clean layout, allowing the user to display objects such as books and glassware to one’s taste. A variety of frame sizes create an elegant and playful entity. Functionality comes into play through the possibility of adjusting the height of the shelves and cabinet. Altogether, this unit model ‘BO 71’ will bring great joy to every bibliomaniac or art collector with a keen eye for Scandinavian Modern Design.

Finn Juhl (1912-1989), born in Denmark, planned on becoming an art historian when he was young. His father however decided it would be a better career move if he went to become an architect. After his architecture degree Juhl worked for ten years with Vilhelm Lauritzen. At the age of 33 Finn Juhl opened his own furniture design practice. In the 1940s he designed a number of creations that regenerated Danish furniture design and broke with the established furniture tradition. Juhl is known as the one of the most important pioneers of Danish design. He was in fact the first Danish furniture designer to gain widespread international recognition. His work was vital to spreading the “Danish Modern” concept around the world. His designs are re-known for being exquisitely elegant, refined up until the smallest detail and extremely well executed.
