De Pas, D’Urbino, and Lomazzi for Stilnovo 'Lampiatta' Multifunctional Lights

Sale price$1,100.00

Gionathan de Pas, Donato D’Urbino & Paolo Lomazzi for Stilnovo, 'Lampiatta' wall lights or table lamps, ABS plastic, lacquered aluminum, bakelite, Italy, design 1971

Designed in 1971 for Stilnovo, the ‘Lampiatta’ exemplifies the inventive and unconventional approach of Jonathan De Pas, Donato D’Urbino and Paolo Lomazzi. Having established their Milan-based studio in 1966, the three designers became prominent figures in Italian design, celebrated for their playful experimentation with materials, form and function. Their work frequently challenged established conventions, combining technical ingenuity with a distinctive sense of humor. The ‘Lampiatta’ reflects this philosophy through its quirky round lampshade reminiscent of an English helmet, and providing adjustable illumination without the need for conventional joints or articulated mechanisms.

The lamp consists of a gently curved, cylindrical body in red molded plastic, supporting a shallow, disc-shaped off-white aluminium reflector. Its most distinctive feature lies in the four narrow slots incorporated into the upper section of the body, into which the reflector can be inserted at different angles. By repositioning the shade between these slots, the direction and inclination of the light can be adjusted with remarkable ease. Originally conceived as a table lamp, the design also accommodates wall mounting, allowing it to serve two functions through a straightforward adaptation of its construction. Combining sculptural simplicity with an ingenious approach to functionality, the ‘Lampiatta’ captures the experimental spirit of Italian design in the early 1970s.
