Donato D'Urbino, Paolo Lomazzi and Thomas Mittermair for Zerodisegno Italy 'Volare' lounge chair, steel, Italy, 1992

A remarkable “Volare” lounge chair, designed in 1992 by Donato D’Urbino, Paolo Lomazzi and Thomas Mittermair. Constructed from black-finished steel wire mesh, the chair transforms an industrial material into a fluid and highly expressive form. Its continuous, undulating surfaces define the seat, high back, armrests and supports, while the transparent grid gives this generously proportioned chair an unexpectedly light appearance. Viewed from different angles, its overlapping lines create a constantly changing graphic effect.

The Volare was produced for only a short period and is consequently seldom encountered. An arresting example of experimental Italian design from the early 1990s, it combines technical ingenuity, visual transparency and a strong architectural presence.
