Guillerme & Chambron, settee, orange fabric, dark stained oak, France, 1950s
A small sofa by Guillerme et Chambron. This French designer duo is known for their extreme high quality solid oak furniture, from which this orange sofa is another great example. It has a very interesting shape looking from the side. The armrests are short and pointy whereas the legs and frame blend over into each other creating a gap between the seat and the armrest. The curved slatted back is an elegant addition to the angular design. The frame of this two-seater is very sculptural with extravagant shapes which can provide either a very elegant or rough expression, depending on their location and upholstery.
The French designer duo Jacques Chambron (1914-2001) and Robert Guillerme (1913-1990) started their production in the Postwar period. Many of the furniture designed by this duo this piece shows a strong character and has a great expressive woodwork. The duo installed themselves in an old factory were the machinery was used to make rifles. Guillerme & Chambron saw the potential of these machinery and decided to continue production as it was installed and used them for the design of their high back chairs. The line of different furniture pieces was made in small editions. They call their collection “Votre Maison” which means “Your home”.
