Angelo Mangiarotti for Bernini Sculptural Dining Table 302 in Marble and Bronze
Angelo Mangiarotti for Bernini, dining table, model '302', cast bronze, marble, Italy, 1959
At first glance, the table appears deceptively simple: a perfect circle of white marble poised on a single tapering base. But the gesture of its form is anything but incidental. The transition from horizontal to vertical is resolved with sculptural clarity, and the table becomes an object of both use and reverence.
Designed by Angelo Mangiarotti, this piece carries both technical ambition and poetic restraint. According to Domus, it was the only known table to be cast entirely in bronze. The base, shaped like a slow, elegant trumpet, was cast at the Battaglia Artistic foundry in Milan, a workshop more accustomed to ecclesiastical commissions and public statuary. It is one of the oldest artistic bronze foundries in the world. The historical weight of the foundry meets the modernist clarity of Mangiarotti’s vision. The geometry of the design is pure and intentional. The base widens as it meets the floor, giving the table a visual and literal stability that allows the top to hover almost impossibly light. There are no unnecessary connections or fussy transitions, only a seamless dialogue between material and form.
Please note that the table is in good overall condition, with the only imperfection being a few minor chips along the marble edge. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.
