Amsterdam School Dutch Art Deco Pair of Lounge Chairs in Oak and Grey Velvet

Tearsheet
Pair of lounge chairs, solid oak, velvet, brass, the Netherlands, 1930s

These charming armchairs belong to the Amsterdam School, a Dutch Art Deco movement. In terms of shape, the chair is defined by its architectural quality with a strongly rectilinear silhouette, yet not rigid. Crafted from solid oak, the subtly wide and flat armrests are supported by stout and clean-lined legs.

At the same time, there are small but significant interruptions in this geometry. The front legs are carved with a rounded, scalloped edge that adds rhythm and a softening detail to an otherwise stern profile. This detail feels almost ornamental, but not in a way that overwhelms. It is more like a nod to Art Deco’s flair, held in check by Dutch restraint. The seat and backrest are upholstered in a softly textured velvet in a grey color, punctuated by brass studs.

Kindly note that the piece is in good, used condition with some signs of age and use. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.
