Attributed to Marcello Piacentini, dining table, walnut, Italy, 1920s

Possibly designed by the Italian architect and urban planner Marcello Piacentini (1881–1960), the table originates from a private residence furnished with his work. It is a true example of 1920s Italian Art Deco, the base consists of two solid, trapezoidal end supports connected by a single stretcher. The carved side elements take the form of a stylized vegetal motif, reminiscent of a sheaf or palmette, rendered in a markedly abstract and linear manner. Its symmetrical, vertically accentuated composition, culminating in a stepped, almost architectural crest, illustrates the Art Deco tendency to translate organic forms into geometric and tectonic structures.
