Pair of Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen Set 'Oxford' Chairs

Sale price$2,580.00

Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, set of eight 'Oxford' chairs, metal, yellow fabric, Denmark, design 1965.

These classic executive office chairs feature a medium high back (as opposed to the models with a low and a very high back), swivel function, arm rests, a five-star base with round feet and a fabric upholstery.
These chairs were originally design by Jacobsen for the professors at St. Catherine's College in Oxford. Jacobsen was also in charge of the college building itself and he was asked to design the surrounding landscape and a series of furniture, of which this example derived from.

Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971), originally trained as an architect is also well-known for his furniture. It was only later in his career that Jacobsen created the pieces that he is now most known for. One of Jacobsen's main aims was to reduce material input to achieve clean visual lines. Technical quality and ergonomics were, however, not affected by the reduction. What is interesting is that where he followed mainly cubist functionalism in his architecture, he nevertheless mainly preferred organic forms in the design of his furniture. What all his works have in common however is the application of the right proportions, both within a piece of furniture and in its relationship to the room.
