Palle Suenson, side table, teak, Denmark, c. 1940

Striking Scandinavian Modern side table by Danish architect and designer Palle Suenson (1904-1987). This particular table is specifically designed for the new office building of Aarhus Oil Fabrik A/S, located in Aarhus, Denmark. From 1938 to 1942 Suenson was responsible for designing and furnishing the office building. The outcome was a functionalist building covered in 5,500 custom-made ceramic tiles. The factory was founded in 1871, producing vegetable oils, primarily for margarine. Suenson’s aim was to fit the interior design within the company’s ethos, drawing inspiration from exotic plants and raw materials that were used at the factory. The side table shows this clearly by its minimalist design, focusing on the pureness of the material, using solid teak wood.
Edward Wormley for Dunbar, pair of armchairs, beech, velvet, United States, 1960s

These armchairs are designed by Edward Wormley for the furniture company Dunbar in the sixties. The construction is characterized by a strict angular and open look. The diagonal placed legs combined with a slightly inclined backrest imbues the design with a strong and sculptural expression. The seat and backrest, which are upholstered in soft forest green velvet, are seamlessly integrated with the pale blond wood frame to create a natural and unified whole. These chairs, with their utter simplicity and precise scaling, embody the hallmarks of the designer’s aesthetic vocabulary.
Edward Wormley (1907–1995), was born in rural Illinois, United States. As a young man, he was passionate about design and enrolled in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1926, but left due to financial issues and began working for an interior design company. He later joined the Dunbar Furniture Company in Indiana, where he served as director of design for almost 40 years. Following World War Two, he became an independent design consultant. Wormley passed away in 1995, but his legacy of creating elegant and high-quality furniture lives on. He was a master in combining classical 20th century design with modern innovations.
