Mario Oreglia, pair of lounge chairs, reupholstered in velvet "St Germain Nougatine" by Métaphores, oak, Italy, 1950s

Mario Oreglia (1916-1989) emerged as one of the leading furniture designers in the post-World War Two era. His designs gained widespread recognition, frequently published in esteemed publications like Domus and Roberto Aloi's furniture overviews. His designs are exemplary for pure modernism with an Italian allure.

These wonderful lounge chairs, newly reupholstered in a soft burnt-orange velvet by Métaphores, represent an exceptionally rare design. Their sculptural presence is emblematic of Oreglia’s artistic language, with the chair’s sweeping, organic forms reflecting the refined modernism and expressive elegance that define his broader body of work. Generous rolled armrests rise in a continuous curve towards the winged back. Despite their substantial proportions, the chairs retain an elegant softness through the fluid transitions between each element. The tapered wooden legs lend visual lightness to the design. Viewed from every angle, the composition reveals Oreglia’s refined understanding of balance, where comfort and sculptural expression exist in perfect harmony.
