Jacques Philippe, desk, solid oak, France, late 1920s

Designed by the French Breton sculptor and cabinetmaker Jacques Philippe (1896-1958), this desk from the late 1920s is a testament to exquisite craftsmanship and profound artistry. The piece can be interpreted within the context of the Seiz Breur art movement, which draws significant influence from the Arts and Crafts movement. Philippe is represented in the collections of the Musée de Bretagne in Rennes, where the original black-and-white photographic documentation of the desk are preserved. His study of Celtology finds direct expression in the design, which exhibits pronounced Celtic characteristics.

The corpus is robustly constructed from solid oak and characterized by arched supports, incorporating a drawer on each side. The exterior is adorned with relief carvings of interlacing curved lines, evocative of traditional Celtic motifs. The desk’s ornamental composition, material selection, and woodworking techniques collectively exemplify the distinctive qualities for which Jacques Philippe is celebrated.
