Antonio Macchi For Arteluce, pair of table lamps, model '610', chrome-plated steel, lacquered steel, lacquered aluminum, Italy, 1973

Antonio Cassia is an Italian industrial designer and engineer, born in Milan in 1937. He designed these 610 table lamps for Arteluce, combining functional innovation with a restrained geometric language. The design consists of a compact rectangular base in an splendid turquoise color supporting an exposed light bulb and a thin chrome rod that carries a square white reflector. Rather than using a conventional lampshade, the movable upper plate acts as an adjustable reflector, allowing the user to alter both the direction and quality of the light. By changing the angle of the plate, the light can be reflected downward, diffused, or directed toward the surrounding space.
