Nadie Jenatzy, coffee table, etched brass, brass, Belgium, 1980s

This refined brass coffee table is on the edge between sculpture and functional design. The top showcases an intricate framework of abstract patterns, surrounded by acid-etched lines that vary in density - sometimes tightly packed, sometimes diverging in multiple directions. The table’s sturdy rectangular base provides essential support, yet its unassuming presence subtly shift the viewer’s attention to the decorative top. This juxtaposition underscores a hallmark of Jenatzy's tables: while the top embraces uniqueness and individuality, the foundation maintains a consistent design. All in, this piece epitomizes Jenatzy's approach to furniture-making; a master craftswoman infusing her creations with an aura of exclusivity and exceptional artisanship.

The piece is signed ‘Jenatzi’.

Nadie Jenatzy (1943-2004) was the wife of sculptor, engraver, antiquarian, mineralogist, decorator Armand Jonckers (1939). They worked together and also as artists apart. Jonckers graduated at Fine Arts in Lausanne in 1957 and opened his own workshop shortly afterwards. Upon graduating, he embarked on a number of creative endeavors: dealing in antiques, studying mineralogy, collecting gems and decorating residences and boutiques, including the clothing shop Lollipop, two Saudi Arabian palaces and the club Le Fashion, a favorite of the Paris elite. From here, he began designing furniture, much of which reused vintage objects and materials. Jonckers evidences a style that some have referred to as baroque with a touch of humor. Although his sought-after works include the monumental tables and coffee tables in the hotel salons, he has never had a formal gallery show.
