Mogens Voltelen for Ivan Schlechter 'Copenhagen' Lounge Chair in Cognac Leather and Teak
Mogens Voltelen for Ivan Schlechter, lounge chair model ‘Copenhagen', teak, patinated leather, brass, Denmark, design 1936
The Copenhagen lounge chair was designed by Mogens Voltelen in 1936 and first presented that same year at The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark. This particular example was made by Danish cabinetmaker and upholsterer Ivan Schlechter and is one of his first examples being crafted by him. Essentially, the overall construction methods remained consistent with Niels Vodder’s version of the chair.
The chair exhibits elegant contours within its wooden framework, with particular emphasis on the gracefully arched back legs, showcasing a splendid dynamic line. The seat and tall backrest are upholstered in strikingly patinated leather, secured in place by brass nails, while leather straps serve as armrests, fastened to the front high legs. Drawing inspiration from classical Spanish folk chairs, the design seamlessly integrates elements of Scandinavian Modern style for a harmonious and sophisticated blend.
Danish architect and furniture designer Mogens Voltelen (1908-1995) graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He worked together with Vilhelm Lauritzen and Poul Henningsen. In 1928, Voltelen opened his own office and worked at a professor from 1959 until 1978.
