Mats Theselius for Källemo AB, limited edition 'Rörligt Objekt' folding screen or room divider, patinated aluminum, wood, Sweden, 1990
Designed by Mats Theselius for Källemo AB, this folding screen or room divider bears the name 'Rörligt Objekt'. The designer made only a limited series of 100 pieces. Inspired by its Swedish name, meaning 'moving', this design showcases its versatility as it can be folded and stored. Each panel is meticulously executed in white patinated aluminum revealing an array of color tones. As Theselius himself puts: "
Aluminum sheet is rather bland when it comes straight from the mill, so I experimented quite a lot with different ways of processing the surface. I honed, rubbed, polished it, and finally I etched it, to get a more lively finish." Moreover, it is likely that chemical treatments were applied, as is characteristic of Theselius’s practice, to accelerate or carefully control the oxidation process. Furthermore, one side of the screen features a consistent arrangement of decorative studs, contributing to its graphically appealing aesthetic.
Mats Theselius (1956) is a Swedish designer who studied interior design at Konstfack, or University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. He is mostly responsible for exclusive and inventive Swedish furniture produced during the 90s. His work is a mix between art and design. Overall, his creations carry a real uniqueness. They are full of aesthetics, style and radiate extravagance. In 2011 Theselius became an associate of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. For his work he received multiple awards such as the Bruno Mathsson Award and Torsten & Wanja Söderberg’s Design Prize in 1997, and the King of Sweden’s Prince Eugen Medal in 2018. To this day, Theselius is still active in creating furniture, lighting, and other works of art.
