Katavolos Littell and Kelley 'New York' Lounge Chair

Sale price£2,190.59

William Katavolos, Ross Littell and Douglas Kelley for Laverne International, lounge chair, faux leather, steel, 1950s design, 1980s production, United States.

This lounge chair, designed by William Katavolos, Ross Littell, and Douglas Kelley for Laverne International's Architectural Group One line, exemplifies a harmonious blend of functionalism and decorative design. The steel frame, characterized by a black cross that serves as connective tissue, imparts an open, floating appearance to the seating. Upholstered in dark brown leatherette, the tufted cushions create an appealing graphical pattern and rhythm. The design is distinguished by a graceful curve where the seat seamlessly transitions into the backrest, embodying both elegance and functionality.

In 1949, a partnership began between William Katavolos, Douglas Kelley, and Ross Littell, all alumni of The Pratt Institute in New York. The three men formed a design studio, which can be considered as part of the so-called Good Design movement of the 1950s: producing furniture in a minimalistic style and usually rendering in lightweight materials. Together they produced a line of furniture called Laverne Originals. Among their renowned creations, the T-chair stood out as particularly noteworthy. This iconic chair design has earned a place in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
