Jens Risom, lounge chair, walnut and fabric, United States, 1960s.

This armchair is designed by Jens Risom. The walnut frame serves as both structural foundation and defining visual element, its crisp, angular lines reflecting the modernist ideals that shaped mid-century design. The wood’s warm tone and subtle grain soften the overall impression. The arms are particularly notable: slender planes of solid walnut that taper toward the front, meeting the seat in a crisp junction that is at once functional and sculptural. The bamboo-patterned fabric adds a layer of organic ornament. The seat’s deep, low-slung proportions and the gently tilted backrest invite a relaxed posture.

Jens Risom (1916-2016) was a Danish born Designer who moved to the New York at the start of his career. When settled there, he met Hans Knoll, and the foundation of an extraordinary collaboration was laid. Together, Knoll and Risom, brought a fresh new style to the interiors of offices and homes in North America, with a strong Danish influence.
