French Adjustable Chaise Longue in Black Metal and Wood

Sale price£2,628.62

Chaise longue, metal, wood, France, 1930s

This functional, adjustable daybed features a frame in black metal and a seat of spiral metal webbing. The backrest is adjustable in different angles and allows the user to switch from an upright position into a comfortable laying position. Characteristic feature is the way the end of the footrest is angled in 90 degrees. It has a handle like finish that echoed the top end of the backrest. The metal frame consists out of tubular and flat elements, straight and curved lines that together create an exciting look. Special feature are the wooden armrests that add a wonderful contrast to the dark frame.

This daybed or chaise longue is clearly inspired by the design of Jean Prouvé and Jules Leleu for a French sanatorium in 1937. The place was supposed to host officers in the east of France. Prouvé and Leleu were hired to design the interior. A limited budget and hygienic requests made them design steel furniture. In all rooms, 7 pieces, inclusive the chaise longue, were used to furnish the rooms.

Please note that this piece is supposed to be used with a cushion. Our in-house restoration atelier can take care of that for you.
