Jabob Kjær for Jacob Kjær Møbelhaandværk, set of six dining chairs, Niger leather, mahogany, brass rivets, Denmark, 1937.

A distinguished set of dining chairs designed by Jacob Kjær for the Paris World Fair of 1937. The chairs are characterized by a refined geometric backrest with vertical spindles, executed in finely crafted mahogany. Their slender proportions lend the overall composition a notable sense of lightness and structural clarity. The seats retain their original cognac-coloured Niger leather upholstery, which has developed a rich and appealing patina over time. Brass rivets along the sides of each seat provide a subtle decorative accent.

Jacob Kjaer (1896-1957) started working as a furniture designer in 1915. From 1918-20 he studied at the Institute of Arts and Crafts Museum in Berlin, then worked in Paris and returned to Copenhagen in 1926. Here, he opened his own workshop. His highly skilled craftsmanship and designs got honored with the Hand Work Medal in 1954.
