Giuseppe Rivadossi for Officina Rivadossi, bookcase, oak, glass, Italy, 1970s
This bookcase by Giuseppe Rivadossi is conceived as a freestanding architectural element rather than simply a piece of storage furniture. Although the construction is robust and made entirely from solid oak, the composition retains a surprisingly light appearance. It can be accessed from both sides, allowing it to function equally well as a bookcase and as a room divider. A practical feature of the bookcase is its adjustable shelving system. The vertical uprights are fitted with regularly spaced slots, allowing the shelves to be positioned at different heights according to changing storage needs. The craftsmanship is evident in the precision of the construction and in the restrained detailing, where decorative effects are achieved through the structure itself rather than applied ornament.
Giuseppe Rivadossi (1935) was born in Monteclana di Nave, Italy, where he continues to live and work. His journey with wood carving began at a young age, each piece embodying his poetic vision of life. In 1962, Rivadossi took over the carpentry business founded by his father, Clemente, in 1920, transforming it into an atelier, or rather a creative workshop. In 1976, Rivadossi and his collaborators established ‘Officina Rivadossi’, where he began crafting unique wooden objects and modern furniture, blending artistry with craftsmanship.
