Fabrizio Cocchia for New Lamp, 'Ziggurat' table lamp, chrome-plated steel, methacrylate, Italy, 1969-1972

This light object is a very rare design by the Italian visionary designer Fabrizio Cocchia, brought to life within the creative and cutting-edge Rome-based studio New Lamp. As its name suggests, Ziggurat captures the essence of the piece. Coccia was inspired by the massive stepped structures of Mesopotamian ziggurats. Structurally, a ziggurat looked like a tiered, receding tower, made up of stacked levels that got progressively smaller toward the top. The design consists of layered methacrylate plates through which light softly escapes, accentuating the edges. Each individual plate can be rotated, allowing for a customizable geometric composition that changes the composition of the piece.

Ziggurat redefines the simple act of illumination through an interplay of material, movement, and optical dynamics. The Ziggurat model was crafted in an exceptionally rare series of no more than fifty pieces.
