Team Form AG (Franz Hero and Karl Odermatt) for COR, 'Trio' sectional sofa, fabric, Germany, design 1973
Designed in 1973 by Swiss designers Franz Hero and Karl Odermatt of Team Form AG for COR, the Trio sofa is regarded as one of the defining modular seating systems of the late twentieth century. Conceived at a time when domestic interiors were becoming increasingly informal, Trio rejected the rigid armrests and upright postures that had dominated earlier upholstered furniture. Instead, it embraced a new culture of relaxation, encouraging lounging, reclining, and social interaction.
The concept is based on only three modular elements: a seat, a reclining backrest, and a corner element. The individual pieces can be combined to create an almost limitless variety of configurations. This flexibility reflected the designers' ambition to create furniture that could adapt effortlessly to changing interiors and lifestyles, making mobility and versatility the central principles of the design.
Offered here is an early vintage edition, retaining its original brown plush upholstery, which lends the geometric composition a rich tactile quality characteristic of the period. Particularly noteworthy is its exceptionally large configuration, a rare example that fully demonstrates the expansive possibilities of the Trio system. More than fifty years after its introduction, Trio remains an icon of modular furniture design.
