Arne Vodder Sideboard in Teak with Reversible Doors
Tearsheet
Arne Vodder for Sibast Møbler, credenza model 29A, teak, Denmark, 1959
This teak sideboard was designed by renowned Danish designer Arne Vodder and showcases the refined craftsmanship and understated elegance characteristic of his work. Signature Vodder details are present throughout, most notably in the beautifully shaped drawers with their distinctive eye-shaped handles. Offering ample storage space, the piece is as functional as it is visually sophisticated. A particularly thoughtful feature is the reversible door panels, finished in teak veneer on one side and black on the other, allowing the appearance of the credenza to be adapted to personal preference and interior setting.
Arne Vodder (1926-2009) should be named among the most influential Scandinavian Midcentury designers, although he is not as well-known as for instance Hans Wegner or Arne Jacobson. Once a student of famous furniture designer Finn Juhl at Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, who later became his friend and business partner. Vodder started out as an architect who designed low-cost housing, later on, he began designing furniture. Although his designs are anything but low-quality, his aim for functional design that could be used by all remained important. He designed amongst others for Fritz Hansen & Sibast.
